Description:
The Gates, Project for Central Park, New York City was the first project in New York City for artists Christo and Jeanne-Claude. The couple immigrated to the city from Europe in 1963 and first proposed The Gates in 1979 as a tribute to their adopted home. However, it was not until January 2003 that New York City mayor Michael R. Bloomberg approved the project. The installation of The Gates was completed on February 12, 2005 and had a sixteen-day duration until February 27, 2005. There were 7,503 gates erected, each one measuring 16 feet in height with widths varying from 5 feet 6 inches to eighteen feet, in accordance with the width of the walkway. Gates were spaced at twelve-foot intervals. The Gates covered twenty-three miles of Central Park's pathways and featured saffron colored fabric panels that hung down from the horizontal tops of each gate to approximately seven feet above the ground. Each gate was secured to a weighted steel base on the paved surface of the walkway.
