Description:
|
From: Sioux Indian Painting. Vol. 2, p. 9: The death of Crazy Horse. The scene is Fort Robinson, Nebraska, in 1877. The fort is indicated by the buildings, crudely in perspective, and by the files of soldiers shown in miniature, schematic figures before the buildings in the distance and in two ranks above the foreground barracks which also are drawn in miniature. Horses and troopers are indicated at the bottom of the composition. The principal figures represent a sargeant and an Indian policeman holding Crazy Horse by the arms while a soldier (as the Indian tradition maintains) runs forward to bayonet him. Drawing by Amos Bad Heart Buffalo. Map references: Fort Robinson (Neb.) Translation of Notes in image (Blish, 1867, p. 401.): Image Top Center: In the season of 1877 Crazy Horse was killed. A Lakota seized him. His name was Little Big Man [(Sicasa Tankala) proper name Charging Bear (Mato Watakpe)]. Image Center: The soldiers and scouts used guns on him. They asked him to go to Washington, but he refused. For this he was killed. Image Upper Right: Guardhouse Image Lower left: Fort Robinson, Nebr. White River. Text references: Sioux Indian Painting. Vol. 2, pp. 6, 9. References: Blish, Helen H. A Pictographic History of the Oglala Sioux. Lincoln, Nebraska: University of Nebraska Press, 1967. p. 401.
