Description:

Excerpt from Pueblo Indian Painting. p. 16: In Pueblo Indian lore the name of the last aztec king, probably brought to New Mexico by Indians in the train of Spanish explorers, has been adopted for the culture hero of their own elder mythic cycles. It is Montezuma, they say, who first summoned the game from the Underworld caverns to be food for man, Montezuma who brouught ordertly life into human society and established his people in villages, and it is Montezuma who, mounting an eagle and ascending into the sky-world after the coming of the white man, left with his Indian children the promise of his later coming to restore their ancient rites and joys. The myth is of the cycle of the tales of Quetzalcoatl and Kukulcan (of cover design), symbolized by the Plumed Serpent (cf. Plate 15), and is undoubtedly pre-Columbian in origin. The drawing shows Montezuma as the great culture hero while beyond him are the mountains whence the deer and the bison have come forth, with sun and rainbow and arc indeicative of the sky (see also Plate 36).
