Alexander, Hartley Burr, 1873-1939. Pueblo Indian painting; 50 reproductions of watercolor paintings by Indian artists of the New Mexican pueblos of San Ildefonso and Sia, with introduction and notes by Dr. Hartley Burr Alexander. Nice (France): C. Szwedzicki, [c1932].
Description:
From Pueblo Indian Painting. p. 14: Representation of the Basket Dance in its tableau moment (cf. Plate 3). The male dancers wear crests of turkey plumes, the turkey being an emblem of fecundity, along with feathers of the macaw and the parrot. The shaking of their rattles over the baskets of the kneeling women is interpreted as a symbolic fertilization. The pine tree also a symbol of life, is associated with this and related dances.
