Description:

Cincinnati's parks have quite a few buildings that are notable for their designs, and many of them were the work of R. Carl Freund (1902-1959). Originally from Wisconsin, Freund was a graduate of the University of Cincinnati and, as a widely known architect, designed many religious and educational buildings. Over a 30 year period, he also designed 37 structures for the Cincinnati park system. Freund had a talent for adapting various architectural styles into his work, and had great admiration of the work of Frank Lloyd Wright. The influence of Wright is clearly evident in many of Freund's buildings, as he worked to integrate the architecture with nature. A fine example of this is the Trailside Nature Museum in Burnet Woods, completed in 1939, with a horizontal design, rustic stone work, and terraces reminiscent of Fallingwater. The Park Board Administration Building, near the main entrance to Eden Park, also shows Freund's admiration for Wright's style. Completed in 1955 and considered by many to be one of his best designs, the brick building has a ground hugging horizontal design and a cruciform plan. The roof has a low slope, with overhanging eaves and canted ends. The building features a fascia with sculpted ornamentation, and the main entry is through a canted chimney-like pylon. Over the years the exterior has remained essentially unchanged, with the exception of the installation of replacement windows. However, the interior was significantly remodeled in the 1990s.
