Description:
|
"Another significant older building in the Frame that has been preserved and converted to a new purpose is the Cincinnati Fire Museum, 315 West Court Street. It occupies the former Court Street Firehouse, which was built in 1906-1907 to house Engine Company 45 and Water Tower No. 1. The Italian Renaissance Revival style building designed by Harry Hake is unusual in that it has doors both in the front and rear. The bays on Court Street were for the firefighting equipment, while those facing Genesee Alley were for the district tool and fuel wagons, which repaired and fired the boilers of the steam fire engine companies. In 1913 a "flying squad" that provided extra help to fight serious fires was organized as Company No. 52 and relocated at the Court Street house. Reorganized and reequipped in 1918 as Cincinnati's first rescue squad, Company 52 operated out of this firehouse until it was closed. The units in the Court Street Firehouse saw more activity than any other in Cincinnati. They were among the first to respond to fires both in the downtown and in the West End where thousands of houses, tenements, and commercial and industrial buildings were packed together. These crowded conditions changed in the 1950s when much of the West End was torn down for urban renewal. By 1962, the Court Street Firehouse was superfluous. Its companies were moved, and the city used this building for storage." (76) The building was turned into a museum by the city in the 1970s.
