Description:
|
"The Fechheimer Mansion, one of Samuel Hannaford's early commissions, sports an imposing Renaissance Revival facade. Its symmetrical lines derive from Renaissance principles of unity and proportion. Pilasters framing the pedimented windows help maintain the balance. Behind the windows are built-in walnut shutters; in front, attractive cast-iron railings connect carved stone pillars. Sir Charles Barry had initiated this domestic, palazzo-style architecture in London with his Travelers' Club (1832) and Reform Club (1841). For many years after 1937 the Fechheimer mansion served as headquarters for the Cuvier Press Club, founded in 1871. This male preserve once relaxed its membership regulations to admit women: the shapely [sic] and much-married Lillian Russel, toast of the Gay Nineties, whose theme song was 'Come Down, My Evenin' Star.'"
