Description:
|
At 48 stories, the Carew Tower is Cincinnati's tallest building and is contemporary with the Empire State Building in New York City; together these buildings helped establish a period of highly concentrated urban design in American cities. A five story base element has a lower course of granite with smooth limestone above and the windows are framed in polished bronze. Relief elements are provided by white metal castings and stone carvings bear distinctive Art Deco characteristics. Relief panels representing modes of transportation surround the east entrance into the interior arcade; the arcade displays Rookwood tiles. The interior decor is a rich mixture of marble, rosewood and metal, plus murals and large Art Deco chandeliers. The block-square complex cost $33,000,000 and was finished in 13 months by crews working seven days a week, 24 hours a day.
