Description:
In October of 2000 ground was broken on the new home for the Cincinnati Reds: The Great American Ballpark. Construction lasted up to the first games of the 2003 season. A team of architects, GBBN Architects of Cincinnati and HOK Sport of Kansas City, completed the project. The open-air stadium seats 42036 fans and includes 27 concession stands. Entrance to the park features benches, statues and landscaped areas inspired by Crosley Field. The exterior facade features brick with cast stone, steel and lighting. The phrase "Rounding third and heading for home" is a popular quotation from Red's announcer Joe Nuxhall. On the south side of the park sculpture recalling Cincinnati's role as a river town is seen in the smoke stacks and paddle wheel.
