Description:
|
The sixteen-story limestone building of 1931 was designed by Samuel Hannaford and Sons. "With its extended base, the building has more floors than first appears.... Numerous setbacks stress verticality, as do window lines and bronze spandrels.... Huge statues project from the tower's upper corners.... These statues allegedly represent four essential characteristics of a 1930s newspaper: Truth, Patriotism, Progress and Speed.... Numerous bas relief are embedded in the walls. Gazing across at each other from the third story corners facing Broadway are Franklin and Gutenberg. Caxton hovers around the corner from Gutenberg, Elzevier from Franklin. Famous printers all, they symbolized the progress of their trade - and by extension, of learning. The arched entrance serves as an intricately decorated frontispiece, appropriate in so literate a building. The bronze grille depicts printers and other artists going about their tasks."
