Description:

"Haddon Hall Apartments is one of the earlier, large apartment buildings put up to provide attractive housing for middle-income families, near public transportation and the center of suburban neigborhood. Erected around 1900 by the Emery family, the massive 4-story gambrel roofed structure was designed by Joseph Steinkamp to blend with Avondale's mansions. Over the decades, population shifts, economic decline of the neighborhood, and rioting that began almost in front of Haddon Hall gave the area the reputation as a 'hub of violence.' By the early 1970s, the building was an abandoned boarded-up shell. The rehabitation of Haddon Hall was given top priority in the city's plans to improve the quality of life in Avondale. Proposals went through the hands of various developers before work finally began in 1982. The renovation of Haddon Hall created over a hundred units of low-income housing for the elderly."
