Description:

"The Emerson A. North Hospital occupies a 25-acre site that was first the location of The Ohio Female College, and then of The Cincinnati Sanitarium. Until the new hospital building opened in 1988, the institution used or left standing several structures dating from the nineteenth-century college. The Ohio Female College opened in 1846. The main college building burned down in 1858 and was rebuilt to be destroyed by fire again in 1868. The Female Ohio College closed in 1872 and was sold the following year to a group of businessmen and doctors for the Cincinnati Sanitarium. The sanitarium was the first privately-operated psychiatric hospital west of the Alleghenies. In addition to medical and psychiatric treatment, the sanitarium offered peaceful grounds, plays, concerts, gardens and home-like rooms. Traction and trolley lines ran to or onto the grounds, so patients' families could visit them easily. The facility was renamed in 1956 in honor of Dr. Emerson A. North (1880-1955)."
