Description:
|
"The creation of the Rollman Psychiatric Institute . . . was the culmination of an effort organized in 1948 by Judge Chase M. Davies and retired department store head Justin A. Rollman (1887-1975) to obtain a state-supported mental health care center." "Rollmann advocated using a building which had been erected in the mid-nineteenth century as the General Protestant Orphan's Home . . . When the orphanage moved to its present location on Beechmont Avenue in Mt. Washington, the old property became available. The site was purchased in 1949, and the building was renovated by the State Division of Mental Hygiene. In August 1954, the Rollmann Receiving Hospital was dedicated and named after Justin Rollman in recognition of his key role in the establishment. Wings were added in 1960 and 1973 to provide more modern facility and a more homelike environment for patients. The original structure built in 1850, with additions in 1867 and 1885, was demolished in 1977."
