Description:
|
William Alms, Frederick Alms and William Doepke, all sons of German immigrants, opened a department store on this site in 1865 and erected the present building in 1878. The department store went out of business in 1953. The building now houses the Hamilton County Department of Human Services. An addition was added in 1912 by Daniel Burnham in the Beaux-Arts style. In 1995 GBBN architects restored the building after it was declared a "sick building" because of bad air quality.
