Description:
|
"Cincinnati's largest and most venerable Catholic church. The 'Old' was added in 1904 when St. Mary's Hyde Park was erected. Originally (as it reads on the facade) 'St. Marien Kirche,' Old St. Mary's was built to serve the rapidly swelling German community settling north of downtown . . . . It was the city's second German-speaking Catholic parish. Begun on Ascension Day 1841, the church building was dedicated on July 3, 1842. Franz Ignatz Erd, a German, was the architect." "St. Mary's original dimensions were 66 feet by 142 feet (the length was extended in 1865 to 190 feet). Plain Doric pilasters leads to an unbroken entablature. Round windows are not unusual in an essentially Greek Revival structure. The steeple rises 170 feet. The quatrefoils are, as on St. Paul's, a Gothic touch. Legend, perhaps supported by fact, has the octagonal spire built around a tree trunk taken from the surrounding woods. The spire rests on an octagonal base, which springs from the square tower."
