Description:
|
Built between 1919 and 1922, on a site chosen by Aline Barnsdall, the Hollyhock house sits on Olive Hill, a 36 acre tract of land by Sunset Blvd, that was once an olive orchard. Working together, Wright and Miss Barnsdall envisioned an acropolis set amongst an urban oasis of green. Plans for the house were released in 1919 that included a public theater and garden, an "actors abode" house, accommodations for an artistic director of the theater, and two smaller houses called Residences A and B. Miss Barnsdall wanted to call her abode the Hollyhocks, which was her favorite flower. In creating the design of the complex, Wright chose to continue with one of his trademark themes; a cave-like entrance to evoke primitive sensations of shelter. This diminutive entrance also set a marked contrast to the expansive interior, which was viewed in controlled increments ultimately leading to the sun-drenched garden court.
