Description:
|
The Guilford School was designed by Garber and Woodward. "Once a neighborhood school, it has since 1973 served handicapped students from all over the city. Its name memorializes Nathan Guilford, who in 1825 proposed legislation to support Ohio's first public schools through property taxes and who later served in Cincinnati as superintendent of schools. The Italian Renaissance facade, well proportioned, has elaborate patterned brickwork and terra cotta decoration. Two entrances, originally one for boys and one for girls, nicely balance the building, as do the two roof terraces. The terraces formerly served as playgrounds for the children in this inner-city school, once at the center of a poor, overcrowded district. High on the facade a cartouche depicts Ft. Washington. A cherub surmounts the cartouche, presumably to remind us that Providence kept a benevolent eye on the fledgling settlement."
