Description:
Described in Catlin's North American Indian Portfolio p. 18. Entry from Catlin's 1848 catalog reads, "Archery of the Mandans. The strife is to prove who can get the greatest number of arrows flying in the air at a time, before the first one reaches the ground. The most of these portraits closely studied from nature. I have seen some of them get eight arrows in the air at one time." Probably sketched in 1832 and painted in the period 1835-1837 (Truettner, 1979, p. 267). See also plate 60 in Manners, Customs and Condition of the North American Indians.
