Description:
Described in Vol. I, pp. 228-231. Caption from Truettner catalog of Catlin's Indian Gallery. Entry from Catlin's 1848 catalog reads, "Dog Feast, Sioux; a religious feast. Given to Mr. Sanford (Indian agent), Mr. Chouteau, Mr. M'Kenzie, and myself, in a Sioux village, 1400 miles above St. Louis, 1933 [sic]. The only food was dog's meat, and this is the highest honour they can confer on a stranger." Probably sketched in 1832 and painted in the period 1832-1837 (Truettner, 1979, p. 285).
