Description:
Described in Vol. I, pp. 127-128. Caption from Truettner catalog of Catlin's Indian Gallery. Entry from Catlin's 1848 catalog reads, "Buffalo Dance, Mandans, with the mask of the buffalo on. Danced to make buffalo come, when they are like to starve for want of food. Song to the Great Spirit, imploring him to send them buffalo, and they will cook the best of it for him." Originally sketched in 1832 and probably painted in the period 1835-1837 (Truettner, 1979, p. 269). See also plate 8 in Catlin's North American Indian Portfolio.
