Description:
|
Described in Vol. II, p. 98. Caption from Truettner catalog of Catlin's Indian Gallery. Entry from Catlin's 1848 catalog reads, "Kee-an-ne-kuk, the Foremost Man, called 'The Prophet.' Chief of the tribe, in the attitude of prayer. This very shrewd fellow engraved on a maple stick, in characters, a prayer which was taught him by a Methodist Missionary; and by introducing it into the hands of every one of his tribe, who are enjoined to read it over every morning and evening as service, has acquired great celebrity and respect in his tribe, as well as a good store of their worldly goods, as he manufactures them all, and gets well paid for them." Probably painted at Fort Leavenworth in 1830 (Truettner, 1979, pp. 208-209). The choker in this print appears to have either a button or a shell disk at the front. In the original oil, the multiple necklaces appear to be made of wampum. The attitude of prayer assumed by the figure in this print is not found in the original oil.
