ART WORKS Horan (Horan, 1986, p. 208) indicates that the original was painted by James Otto Lewis (1799-1858) at the Treaty of Fond du Lac, held at Fond du Lac (Minn.) in 1826. He further indicates that the individual was Ojibwa. According to the caption on the plate with this portrait in The Aboriginal Port-Folio, the original was painted by Lewis at the Treaty of Prairie du Chien, held at Prairie du Chien (Wis.) in 1825. Eagle's Bed is not listed as a signatory of either the Treaty of Prairie du Chien or the Treaty of Fond du Lac. The portrait is not listed in the catalog of Lewis' Indian Gallery. Location of original unknown. The Lewis original was copied by Charles Bird King (1785-1862) in Washington, D.C. in 1826 (Cosentino: 463). The copy is listed as No. 49 in the Catalogue of Indian Paintings Belonging to the Government Collection which appeared in William J. Rhees' 1859 Guide to the Smithsonian Institution: "WAU-TOP-E-NOT, The Eagle's Bill -- Fox (King from Lewis, 1826)" (Viola, 1976, p. 144). This copy was destroyed in the Smithsonian fire of 1865. A portrait of "Waa-top-e-not. Chippewa Chief." by Henry Inman (1801-1846), formerly in the Peabody Museum of Archeology and Ethnology, Harvard University (Peabody No. 82-51-10\28252), is in a private collection (Peabody Museum of Archaeology and Ethnology Inventory).

PRINTS A lithograph based on the Lewis painting appears only in the Philadelphia, 1835-1838 edition of The Aboriginal Port-Folio. The name given is "WAA-TOP-E-NOT / or the / EAGLE'S BED", not Eagle's Bill. The individual is labeled "Fox". (Reese: 56) Lithographs of "Waa-top-e-not" (without tribal identification) based in the Inman copy of the King portrait after Lewis appear in the following editions of McKenney, Thomas Loraine, 1785-1859, and Hall, James, 1793-1868. The History of the Indian Tribes of North America: Philadelphia: F. W. Greenough, 1838-1844. Philadelphia: J. T. Bowen, 1848-1850. The portraits in The Aboriginal Port-Folio and McKenney & Hall are very different. This, as well as the differing tribal identifications, suggests that these were separate individuals or that they were based on very different portraits. Both Horan and Ewers indicate the McKenney & Hall portrait is based on the King copy of the Lewis portrait described above. (Horan, 1986, p. 209; Ewers, 1954, p. 471).
