Description:

ART WORKS Horan (Horan, 1986, p. 172) states that Kee-she-waa Fox (Meshkwakihug) is The Sun (Kee-shes-wa) Fox (Meshkwakihug). He further indicates that The Sun was painted by King in Washington (D.C.) in 1824 and that this portrait was made by King in Washington (D.C.) in 1837. The individuals' faces are very different and they are dressed very differently. If Horan is correct, the individual painted in 1837 appears younger than in 1824. Cosentino (Cosentino, 1977, p 170) indicates that The Sun was painted by King in 1837. Again, if Horan is correct, this individual was painted at the same time. Kee-she-waa may indeed be a variant of The Sun (Kee-shes-wa), but the individual represented in this lithograph is not The Sun. Christopher W. Lane (Personal Communication) suggests that he may be Shawnee. In any event, he is unidentified.
