ART WORKS Original painted by Charles Bird King (1785-1862) in Washington (D.C.) in 1825 (Cosentino: 383). This portrait is listed as No. 50 in the Catalogue of Indian Paintings Belonging to the Government Collection which appeared in William J. Rhees' 1859 Guide to the Smithsonian Institution: "NAHETLUC-HOPIE, Little Doctor -- Creek Chief (King, 1825) The red spots on his dress mark the balls that he received when he was surprised in his hut. The three lower balls were lower than marked in the picture. The paint on the face is commemorative of the same event, as the blood ran from his nostrils and mouth." (Viola, 1976, p. 144). This copy was destroyed in the Smithsonian fire of 1865. There is a King sketch tentatively identified as that of Little Doctor (Cosentino: 637). It is one of sixteen studies owned by Mr. & Mrs. Bayard LeRoy King, Saunderstown, Rhode Island (Cosentino, 1977, p. 204). Viola (Viola, 1976, p. 130) identifies this sketch as being The Spoon (Amiskquew). A copy of the King portrait by Henry Inman (1801-1846), formerly in the Peabody Museum of Archaeology & Ethnology, Harvard University (Peabody Number: 82-51-10\28246), is in the D. Harold Byrd, Jr. Collection (Viola, 1983, Plate 8).
