ART WORKS Horan (Horan, 1986, p. 196) indicates that the original may have been painted by Charles Bird King (1785-1862) or George Cooke (1793--1849) and is probably dated 1837. Cosentino lists a portrait of Tahcoloquoit by King (Cosentino: 452), which appears as No. 32 in the Catalogue of Indian Paintings Belonging to the Government Collection which appeared in William J. Rhees' 1859 Guide to the Smithsonian Institution: "TAH-COL-A-QUOIT -- A Sac" (Viola, 1976, p. 143). This painting was destroyed in the Smithsonian fire of 1865. There is a King sketch of Tahcoloquoit (Cosentino: 643). It is one of sixteen studies owned by Mr. & Mrs. Bayard LeRoy King, Saunderstown, Rhode Island (Cosentino, 1977, p. 205; Viola, 1976, p. 129). A copy of the King portrait by Henry Inman (1801-1846) is in the Peabody Museum of Archaeology & Ethnology, Harvard University (Peabody Number: 82-51-10\28241).
