ART WORKS Three portraits of Crouching Eagle by Charles Bird King (1785-1862), painted in Washington (D.C.) in 1824 are identified by Cosentino. The first (Cosentino: 471) is listed as No. 65 in the Catalogue of Indian Paintings Belonging to the Government Collection which appeared in William J. Rhees' 1859 Guide to the Smithsonian Institution: "WAI-KEE-CHAI, Crouching Eagle, Sanky Chief; Fox (King)" (Viola, 1976, p. 144). This painting was destroyed in the Smithsonian fire of 1865. The second (Cosentino: 472), King's personal copy, was bequeathed to the Redwood Library & Athenaeum, Newport, Rhode Island. In 1970 it was sold to The Warner Collection, Gulf State Paper Corporation, Tuscaloosa, Alabama. The third (Cosentino: 473) was acquired by Hirschl & Adler Galleries, New York, New York, at the Geraldine Rockefeller Dodge estate sale, 1976. There is a King sketch of Crouching Eagle (Cosentino: 646). It is one of sixteen studies owned by Mr. & Mrs. Bayard LeRoy King, Saunderstown, Rhode Island (Cosentino, 1977, p. 205; Viola, 1976, p. 128). A portrait of Crouching Eagle by Henry Inman (1801-1846) after King, formerly in the Peabody Museum of Archaeology & Ethnology, Harvard University (Peabody Number: 82-51-10\28237), is in a private collection (Peabody Museum of Archaeology and Ethnology Inventory).
