Description:

ART WORKS Horan (Horan, 1986, p. 282) indicates that the original was painted by James Otto Lewis (1799-1858) at the Treaty of Butte des Morts, held at Butte des Morts (Wis.) in 1827. Tshi-zun-hau-kau is not among the signatories of that treaty. This portrait does not appear in The Aboriginal Port-Folio, nor is it listed in the catalog of Lewis' Indian Gallery. Horan (Horan, 1986, p. 282) further states that the Lewis portrait was copied in Washington (D.C.) by Charles Bird King (1785-1862). Cosentino does not list a portrait of this individual by King. A portrait with no artist indicated is listed as No. 126 in the Catalogue of Indian Paintings Belonging to the Government Collection which appeared in William J. Rhees' 1859 Guide to the Smithsonian Institution: "TSHI-ZHUN-KAU-KAW, He who runs with the deer -- Of the Day-kau-ray family. Winnebago Chief" (Viola, 1976, p. 145). This painting was destroyed in the Smithsonian fire of 1865. A portrait of this individual by Henry Inman (1801-1846), formerly in the Peabody Museum of Archaeology and Ethnology, Harvard University (Peabody Number: 82-51-10\28236) is now in the D. Harold Byrd, Jr. Collection (Viola, 1983, Plate 3).
