ART WORKS Plate 68 of The Aboriginal Port-Folio (1835-1838) indicates that the original was painted by James Otto Lewis (1799-1858) at the Treaty of Prairie du Chien, held at Prairie du Chien (Wis.) in 1825. Lewis' 1850 catalog indicates the original was painted at the Treaty of Fond du Lac, held at Fond du Lac (Minn.) in 1826. The Snake is not listed among the signatories of either treaty. Location of original unknown. The Lewis original was copied by Athanasius Ford in Washington, D.C. This copy is listed as No. 57 in the Catalogue of Indian Paintings Belonging to the Government Collection which appeared in William J. Rhees' 1859 Guide to the Smithsonian Institution: "WAA-KAWN, The Snake - Winnebago (Ford from Lewis, 1826)" (Viola, 1976, p. 144). This copy was destroyed in the Smithsonian fire of 1865. A copy of the Ford painting by Henry Inman (1801-1846) is in the Peabody Museum of Archaeology and Ethnology, Harvard University (Peabody Number: 82-51-10\28226). George Catlin (1796-1872) painted The Snake, probably in Washington (D.C.) in 1828 (Truettner Gallery No. 213) (Truettner, 1979, p. 201).
