Description:
ART WORKS Plate 66 in The Aboriginal Port-Folio (1835-1838) indicates that Little Elk was painted by James Otto Lewis (1799-1858) at the Treaty of Prairie du Chien, held at Prairie du Chien (Wis.) in 1825. Lewis' 1850 catalog indicates the original was painted at the Treaty of Fond du Lac, held at Fond du Lac (Minn.) in 1826. Ho-wa-mick-a, The Little Elk, is listed as a signatory of the Treaty of Prairie du Chien (Kappler, 1904, Vol. 2, p. 154). The location of this painting is unknown. The Lewis original was copied by Athanasius Ford in Washington, D.C. This copy is listed as No. 16 in the Catalogue of Indian Paintings Belonging to the Government Collection which appeared in William J. Rhees' 1859 Guide to the Smithsonian Institution: "O-WAN-ICK-KOH, Little Elk - Winnebago (A. Ford from Lewis, 1826)" (Viola, 1976, p. 143). This copy was destroyed in the Smithsonian fire of 1865. Horan (Horan, 1986, p. 290) indicates that King made a copy of the Lewis painting in 1827. Truettner (Truettner, 1979, p. 202) seems to agree. A copy of the Ford portrait after Lewis by Henry Inman (1801-1846), formerly in the Peabody Museum of Archaeology & Ethnology, Harvard University (Peabody Number: 82-51-10\28225), is in a private collection. Smithsonian Institution Art Inventories. Painting Inventory. 20780282 indicates a portrait of Little Elk by Charles Bird King (1785-1862). It is dated 1821 and has dimensions of 24 3\4 x 20 3\4 in. (62.9 x 52.7 cm.). The Inventory locates the painting in the Fogg Art Museum, Harvard University. This painting is not listed in Cosentino. Another King portrait of Little Elk (Cosentino: 338), dated 1828, is listed as No. 58 in the Catalogue of Indian Paintings Belonging to the Government Collection which appeared in William J. Rhees' 1859 Guide to the Smithsonian Institution: "HOO-WAU-NEE-KAW, Little Elk - Winnebago orator of the Car-ray-manu-nee family" (Viola, 1976, p. 144). This copy was destroyed in the Smithsonian fire of 1865. A third King portrait of Little Elk (Cosentino: 339), dated 1828, is located by Cosentino and Viola in the Peabody Museum of Archaeology & Ethnology, Harvard University (Cosentino, 1977, p. 62, 169; Viola, 1976, p. 138). Cosentino and Viola indicate that the painting is oil on wood panel and give the following dimensions for this portrait: 17 1\2 x 13 3\8. A portrait of Little Elk after King by Henry Inman (1801-1846), formerly in the Peabody Museum of Archaeology & Ethnology, Harvard University (Peabody Number: 82-51-10\28268), is in the D. Harold Byrd, Jr. Collection (Viola, 1983, Plate 26). George Catlin (1796-1872) painted Little Elk, probably in Washington (D.C.) in 1828 (Truettner Gallery No. 215) (Truettner, 1979, p. 202).
