Description:

ART WORKS Original painted by James Otto Lewis (1799-1858) at the Treaty of Butte des Morts, held at Butte des Morts (Wis.) in 1827 (Horan, 1986, p. 288). Wooden Ladle is not listed as a signatory of the Treaty of Butte des Morts, the Treaty of Fond du Lac, or the Treaty of Prairie du Chien. No portraits of Wooden Ladle are listed in the catalog of the Lewis Indian Gallery. Location of original unknown. Charles Bird King (1785-1862) copied the Lewis original in Washington (D.C.) (Cosentino: 302). Based on the Catalogue of Indians Paintings Belonging to the Government Collection which appeared in William J. Rhees' 1859 Guide to the Smithsonian Institution, Cosentino (Cosentino, 1977, p. 166) indicates that the copy was made in 1826, which is not possible. It is listed as No. 6 in the Catalogue in Rhees "AM-EIQUON, Wooden Ladle (King from Lewis, 1826" (Viola, 1976, p. 143). It was destroyed in the Smithsonian fire of 1865.
