ART WORKS Original painted by George Cooke (1793-1849) in Washington (D.C.) in 1837. The portrait is listed as No. 39 in the Catalogue of Indian Paintings Belonging to the Government Collection which appeared in William J. Rhees' 1859 Guide to the Smithsonian Institution: "AP-PA-ROOSE-O-KE-MAW, A chief when a child -- Sac (Cooke, 1837)" (Viola, 1976, p. 144). It was destroyed in the Smithsonian fire of 1865. For Daguerreotype portraits of Appanooset by Thomas Easterly, see Kilgo, 1994, pp. 127, 136.
