ART WORKS"Waa-pa-laa or the Playing Fox, prince of the Fox tribe" was painted by James Otto Lewis (1799-1858) at the Treaty of Prairie du Chien, held at Prairie du Chien (Wis.) in 1825. Wan-ba-law, The Playing Fox is listed among the Fox signatories of that treaty (Kappler, 1904, Vol. 2, p. 255). The portrait is listed as No. 64 in the catalog of the Lewis Indian Gallery. Location of this painting is unknown. The Lewis portrait was copied by Athanasius Ford in Washington, D.C. in 1826. The copy is listed as No. 102 in the Catalogue of Indian Paintings Belonging to the Government Collection which appeared in William J. Rhees' 1859 Guide to the Smithsonian Institution: "WAA-PUA-TAA, Playing Fox -- Prince of the Foxes (Ford from Lewis, 1826)" (Viola, 1976, p. 144). This painting was destroyed in the Smithsonian fire of 1865. A copy of the Ford painting by Henry Inman (1801-1846), formerly in the Peabody Museum of Archeology and Ethnology, Harvard University (Peabody No. 82-51-10\28257), is in the D. Harold Byrd, Jr.Collection (Viola, 1983, Plate 20). Charles Bird King (1786-1862) painted a portrait of "Wa-pel-la, Fox chief," in Washington D.C., in 1837 (Cosentino: 476). The King portrait is listed as No. 106 in the Catalogue of Indian Paintings Belonging to the Government Collection which appeared in William J. Rhees' 1859 Guide to the Smithsonian Institution: WA-PELLA, The Prince - Fox (King, 1837)" (Viola, 1976, p. 144). This painting was destroyed in the Smithsonian fire of 1865. The Lewis and King portraits may have been different paintings of the same individual.
