ART WORKS Four portraits of Great Walker, painted by Charles Bird King (1785-1862) in Washington (D.C.) in 1824 are identified by Cosentino. The first (Cosentino: 373) is listed as No. 88 in the Catalogue of Indian Paintings Belonging to the Government Collection which appeared in William J. Rhees' 1859 Guide to the Smithsonian Institution: "MAH-NE-HAH-NAH, Great Walker -- Ioway Chief (King)" (Viola, 1976, p. 144). It was destroyed in the Smithsonian fire of 1865. The second (Cosentino: 374) is in the Thomas Gilcrease Institute of American History & Art, Tulsa, Oklahoma. The third (Cosentino: 375), King's personal copy, was bequeathed to the Redwood Library and Athenaeum, Newport, Rhode Island. It was sold in 1970 and is in an unknown private collection. There is a King sketch of Great Walker (Cosentino: 636). It is one of sixteen studies owned by Mr. & Mrs. Bayard LeRoy King, Saunderstown, Rhode Island (Cosentino, 1977, p. 203; Viola, 1976, p. 126).
