Description:
ART WORKS A portrait of White Cloud is listed as No. 71 in the catalog of the Lewis Indian Gallery (Lewis, 1850, p. 19). Two portraits of White Cloud painted by Charles Bird King (1785-1862) in Washington (D.C.) in 1824 are identified by Cosentino. The first (Cosentino: 361) is in the Thomas Gilcrease Institute of American History & Art, Tulsa, Oklahoma. The second (Cosentino: 362) is unlocated. Cosentino (Cosentino, 1977, p. 172) suggests that these paintings may be one and the same, as no White Cloud portrait appears in the Catalogue of Indian Paintings Belonging to the Government Collection which appeared in William J. Rhees' 1859 Guide to the Smithsonian Institution.
