ART WORKS Plate 57 of The Aboriginal Port-Folio (1835-1838) indicates that the original image was painted by James Otto Lewis (1799-1858) at the Treaty of Fond du Lac, held at Fond du Lac (Minn.) in 1826. This painting, entitled "Chippeway Squaws" includes the nursing mother and two additional women, each carrying a child on her back. This painting is listed as No. 27 in the catalog of the Lewis Indian Gallery (Lewis, 1850, p.l 12). Location of original unknown. The artist is not indicated for the painting listed as No. 145 in the Catalogue of Indian Paintings Belonging to the Government Collection which appeared in William J. Rhees' 1859 Guide to the Smithsonian Institution: "CHIPPEWAY SQUAWS (1826.)" (Viola, 1976, p. 145). This painting was destroyed in the Smithsonian fire of 1865. A painting entitled "Mother and Child. Chippewa." by Henry Inman (1801-1846) after Charles Bird King (1785-1862) after Lewis (Peabody No. 82-51-10/28205) is in the Peabody Museum of Archeology and Ethnology, Harvard University. Another painting, entitled "Squaw and Child. Chippewa.", by Henry Inman after King (Peabody No. 82-51-10/28202), formerly in the Peabody Museum of Archeology and Ethnology, Harvard University, is in a private collection (Peabody Museum of Archaeology and Ethnology Inventory).

Lithographs based on the central figure of the Lewis painting appear in the following editions of McKenney, Thomas Loraine, 1785-1859, and Hall, James, 1793-1868.
