ART WORKS Horan (Horan, 1986, p. 280) indicates that the original painted by James Otto Lewis (1799-1858) at the Treaty of Butte des Morts, held at Butte des Morts (Wis.) in 1827. The Wood does not appear in The Aboriginal Port-Folio, nor is his portrait listed in the catalog of the Lewis Indian Gallery. Kappler does not list The Wood as a signatory of that treaty. Location of original unknown. According to Horan (Horan, 1986, p. 280) the Lewis original was copied by Charles Bird King (1785-1862) in Washington (D.C.) in 1828. The King portrait of The Wood (Cosentino: 384) does not indicate that it is after Lewis. The Wood was in Washington (D.C.) in 1828. The realism and detail of the Inman copy and the McKenney & Hall lithograph suggest that King painted a different portrait. The King portrait is listed as No. 75 in the Catalogue of Indian Paintings Belonging to the government collection which appeared in William J. Rhees' 1859 Guide to the Smithsonian Institution: "NAU-KAW, Wood -- O the Cor-ray-mau-nee family. Principal Chief of Winnebago deputation, 94 years old" (Viola, 1976, p. 144). This copy was destroyed in the Smithsonian fire of 1865. A copy of the 1828 King painting by Henry Inman (1801-1846), formerly in the Peabody Museum of Archeology and Ethnology, Harvard University (Peabody Number: 06-21-10\66307), is in the D. Harold Byrd, Jr. Collection (Viola, 1983, Plates 10, 33). The Wood was painted by George Catlin (1796-1872) probably in Washington, D.C. in 1828 (Truettner Gallery No. 209) (Truettner, 1979, pp. 200-201).
