Description:

ART WORKS James Otto Lewis (1799-1858) painted Little Crow at the Treaty of Prairie du Chien, held at Prairie du Chien (Wis.) in 1825. The Little Crow Sussetong was a signatory of that treaty (Kappler, 1904, Vol. 2, p. 154). The Lewis portrait is listed as No. 60 in the catalog of the Lewis Indian Gallery (Lewis, 1850, p. 18). Location of original unknown. The Lewis original was copied by Charles Bird King (1785-1862) in Washington (D.C.) in 1826 (Cosentino: 342). The King copy is listed as No. 140 in the Catalogue of Indian Paintings Belonging to the government collection which appeared in William J. Rhees' 1859 Guide to the Smithsonian Institution: "KAA-KAA-HUXE, Little Crow (King from Lewis, 1826.)" (Viola, 1976, p. 145). This copy was destroyed in the Smithsonian fire of 1865. King painted another portrait of Little Crow when he visited Washington, D.C. in 1824 (Cosentino: 313). This portrait is listed as No. 125 in the Catalogue of Indian Paintings Belonging to the government collection which appeared in William J. Rhees' 1859 Guide to the Smithsonian Institution: SHE-TAH-WAH-COE-WAR-MENE, The sparrow that hunts as he walks -- A Sioux (King.)" (Viola, 1976, p. 145). This painting was destroyed in the Smithsonian fire of 1865. A copy of the 1824 King portrait by Henry Inman (1801-1846), formerly in the Peabody Museum of Archeology and Ethnology, Harvard University (Peabody Number: 82-51-10\28196), is in the Minnesota Historical Society (MHS No.: AV1982.306.4).
