ART WORKS James Otto Lewis (1799-1858) apparently painted two portraits of this individual. The location of both originals is unknown. Plate 3 in The Aboriginal Port-Folio (1835-1838) indicates that the original of this image was painted by Lewis at the Treaty of Fond du Lac, held at Fond du Lac (Minn.) in 1826. Lewis' 1850 catalog indicates the original was painted at the Treaty of Prairie du Chien, held at Prairie du Chien (Wis.) in 1825 (Lewis, 1850, p. [7]). Figured Stone signed both treaties (Kappler, 1904. Vol. 2, pp. 254, 270). Location of original unknown. Horan (Horan, 1986, p. 202) indicates that the original of a second image was copied by Charles Bird King (1785-1862) in Washington (Cosentino: 448). A copy is listed as No. 2 in the Catalogue of Indian Paintings Belonging to the Government Collection which appeared in William J. Rhees' 1859 Guide to the Smithsonian Institution: "SHING-YAW-BA-WUS-SEN, The Figured Stone" (Viola, 1976, p. 143). This copy was destroyed in the Smithsonian fire of 1865. A copy of the King painting by Henry Inman (1801-1846), formerly in the Peabody Museum of Archeology and Ethnology, Harvard University (Peabody No. 82-51-10\28220), is in a private collection (Peabody Museum of Archaeology and Ethnology Inventory).
