Description:

ART WORKS Original painted by Peter Rindisbacher (1806-1834) at Prairie du Chien (Wis.) in 1829 for Caleb Atwater (1778-1867). Specific individuals mentioned as being included in the image are Keokuk, Morgan, Tiahma, and Quasquawma and Tom (a half-blood) (McDermott, 1949, p. 137). The location of this painting is unknown. Another version painted by Rindisbacher is in the West Point Museum (WPM Acc. No.: 561). This may have belonged to Rindisbacher and been purchased at his death by a "Major Hughes of Washington." subsequently coming to the Museum (Josephy, 1970, pp. 78, 80). A second version was reported belonging to the M'Guire family of Washington, D.C., in 1933, but was no longer in their possession by 1949 (Josephy, 1970, p. 60; McDermott, 1949, p. 144). A third version, painted in 1833 or 1834 for Maximilian zu Wied, is part of the Maximilian-Bodmer Collection in the Joslyn Art Museum.

Greenough, 1838-1844. The lithograph reproduced here includes numbers next to 9 individuals. There is no key in the text. A lithograph based on that in McKenney & Hall appeared as the frontispiece of Vol. 2 of Murray, Charles Augustus, Sir, 1806-1895. Travels in North America During the Years, 1834, 1835 & 1836. London: R. Bentley, 1839.
