First authorized edition of Noah Webster’s American Spelling Book published in Cincinnati.

1834

Power presses available in Cincinnati.
Truman & Smith form partnership.

1835-1837

J.A. James & Company

1836

First of the original six McGuffey Readers is published.

1843

Truman & Smith partnership dissolves, renamed to W. B. Smith & Co.

1847-1854

J.A. And U.P. James (1847-54, Walnut St. Above 4th)

1857

Panic of 1857.
D. Appleton & Co. (NY) is formed.

1860

Ivison, Blakeman & Co. (NY) is formed.

1861

Civil War Begins.
A.S. Barnes & Co. is formed.

1863

Winthrop B. Smith retires, name changed to Sargent, Wilson & Hinkle Co.

1874-1980s

The James Bookstore (1874-1980s) opens.

1877

Wilson, Hinkle & Co. again changes names to Van Antwerp, Bragg & Co. after two senior parnters retire.

1883

Van Antwerp, Bragg & Co. is the largest textbook publisher in the world, producing 4.5 million volumes a year.

1890

The American Book Company is formed (1874-1980s)

1901
Last McGuffey Reader edition published with an estimated 100 million copies being printed in total.
