Description:
Gloucester Docks is a key piece in illustrating Dixie Selden's propensity of utilizing light as a method of heightening colors in a scene, as well as showing off her freely handled brushstrokes that flow together to create a powerful sense of movement and life in her painted scenes. The subject of this piece was the result of a forced halt to Selden's annual painting excursions in Europe during the war years, and her subsequent search for new painting destinations closer to home. She ended up in Gloucester, Massachusetts in 1917, where a popular art colony that was frequented by many Cincinnati artists existed. It is here where Selden's work also reached its full maturity, and it is this location that acts as the subject for some of her finest pieces.
