Description:
"Baker (1792-1857), after whom the street is named, came to Cincinnati from New Jersey in 1814 and, according to family tradition, traded a white horse for a "piece of Fourth and Walnut" Streets. He later bought a large tract in East Walnut Hills. In 1853, Baker engaged James Keyes Wilson (1828-1894), Cincinnati's most prominent architect, to design this asymmetrical 2-story brick home. With its square tower and elegant tracery, Woodburn is one of the city's few residential examples of the Gothic Revival style. Baker's son, Nathan, brought much of the home's furniture from Europe. The house later underwent some modernization including the addition of a wing in 1910. In 1979, the sixth generation of Baker's descendants decided to sell the home and its furnishings, setting off a battle between preservationists who wanted to convert the structure to a museum with all of the contents intact and neighbors who wanted to maintain the "fragile but stable" residential character..."
