Description:
|
"The May House is located in the western part of northern Avondale, where the terrain is fairly hilly. Framed by trees, it is set diagonally on the lot to face the corner intersection, which is marked by a graceful wrought-iron arch on stone gateposts. The house forms a compact but richly ornamented limestone block, its formality enlivened by a green glazed-tile roof. The central section of the facade has the full panoply of Beaux-Arts classicism, with engaged columns, urns, carved swags and panels, and volute-framed dormers. This central "pavilion," with its restrained but carefully calculated rectangular and curved rhythms, is flanked by barely projecting wings. Everything is governed by fine proportions and high-quality craftsmanship. The internal arrangements dictate a much less orderly massing at the back of the house, but the handsome detached garage with chauffeur's quarters has a cubical form that echoes the main block. A small formal garden is centered on the room-size side-porch off the living room to the right."
