Description:

"It was built around 1820 for Martin Baum (1765-1831), an early entrepreneur and local booster. Pennsylvania iron magnate David Sinton purchased the residence in 1871. Two years later, Sinton's daughter Anna married the promising young lawyer, Charles Phelps Taft. Charles and Anna Sinton were dedicated to preserving the residential character of their neighborhood. On June 2, 1927, the Tafts announced that they would give their home, their personal art collection, and a one million dollar endowment for its maintenance if $2.5 million could be raised from the public. The Taft Museum opened to the public in 1932. On exhibit is a varied collection of Chinese porcelain, antique furniture, French enamels, miniature portraits, and oil paintings by Turner, Gainsborough, Constable, Millet, Rembrandt, Sargent, Duveneck, Goya, Halls, and Farny. In the 1840's Robert Duncanson, noted black American artist, painted the landscape murals that decorate the entry hall of the house."
