Description:

From: Sioux Indian Painting. Vol. 1, p. 14: Shoshone dance participated in only by the men. Brilliant attire, with full ornament is sought by each participant, and the dance is the occasion of much gift-giving. The wolf is a warrior symbol for many of the tribes of the Great Plains, and it is probably that this dance was originally an appeal to the wolf spirit as tutelary of those who would follow the trail in war. Today it is primarily a social occasion. Painting on muslin by Charles Washakie, son of Chief Washakie. (Collection of C.A. Carter, Los Angeles, to whom it was presented by the artist.) Text references: Sioux Indian Painting. Vol. 1, pp. 10, 14, 15. References: Maurer, Evan M. Visions of the People: A Pictorial History of Plains Indian Life. Minneapolis, Minnesota: Minneapolis Institute of Arts, 1992. p. 252.
