Description:
|
From: Sioux Indian Painting. Vol. 1, p.13: Painting on dressed antelope skin by Chief Washakie of the Shoshone. The painting was made in 1898 in the artist's ninety-fourth year (according to other authorities in his one hundred and second year). It depicts hunting scenes, in one of which a bison was killed with one arrow; in a second with two arrows; in a third the game escaped; in a fourth the bison fell and broke his neck. The record is of several hunts, and the chief represents himself in varying costume. Owned by C.A. Carter of Los Angeles, to whom it was presented by Chief Washakie. The style is typical of an earlier generation. In the National Museum, Washington, is a painted elkskin by this chieftain, representing his exploits in war. Text references: Sioux Indian Painting. Vol. 1, pp. 10, 13, 14 References: Furst, Peter T. and Furst, Jill L. North American Indian Art. New York, New York: Rizzoli, 1982. p. 187. Maurer, Evan M.
