Description:
The first Mother of God Church was established by German Catholics as a church and parochial school, and was dedicated in 1842. The building soon was strained to capacity, and was destroyed in 1870, with the replacement built on its site. In 1906, the school was opened as a separate facility across the road, which was closed in 1961 due to low enrollment. In 1986 the cupola was severely damaged by a tornado, and during the restoration process the building was set alight by a welding torch. The restoration was ultimately successful, and the total cost exceeded $1 million. The Mother of God Church contains murals by Johann Schmitt, a Northern Kentucky muralist whose work was commissioned by the Vatican and who served as an early teacher of prominent Cincinnati artist Frank Duveneck.
