Description:
|
Washington Park was originally a burial ground, used by Presbyterians, Episcopalians, and German Protestants. Nineteenth century fears of miasma, combined with the need for an open green space in Cincinnati, led to the corpses being exhumed (and reburied in Cincinnati's beloved Spring Grove cemetery) and the creation of Washington Park over the old grave sites in 1855, with additional land purchased in 1860. Some of the Parks attractions included a 10-ton meteorite and a Civil War canon. Despite its popularity, as the surrounding Over-the-Rhine neighborhood declined so too did the Park, as its main patrons feared for their safety in the area. In 1958 a school and playground were added, but did little to assist the Park. Given it's close proximity to Music Hall, Washington Park became one of the focal points of Cincinnati's urban revitalization effort, and in 2012 the park underwent a thorough redesign, including the installation of an underground car park and controversial rules which banned activities such as clothes exchanging and 'dumpster diving', common amongst the homeless who had hitherto occupied the Park at night. The Park is now once again a Cincinnati landmark, serving as a recreational area for a diverse community.
