Description:

"Scarlet Oaks, as the house is also known, was probably the most expensive building erected until then in Cincinnati. James Keys Wilson, architect of the Wise Temple downtown, designed this huge Gothic castle for George K. Schoenberger. Scarlet Oaks was in its day, with fifty-one rooms, Cincinnati's largest, most lavish mansion. The exterior is of limestone, trimmed in freestone. "1867," the year of construction began, appears on the east gable. Unlike the Probasco house, the thrust of Scarlet Oaks is more vertical than horizontal. Largely Gothic in style, this building soars. Pinnacles with crockets, pointed windows, castellated turrets, tall, narrow chimneys: all elements rise to the tower. From there the octagonal tourelle carries the eye to the top of the fleche, eighty feet above ground."
