Description:
|
"The theater is situated on the northeast corner of Essen's central Stadtgarten (city park). Hidden from view under the theater is a 500-space parking garage. The building itself comprises two large interlocking irregular volumes. The central volume encloses the theater and the adjacent public spaces (lobby, bar, etc.), while the lower, wrapping volume contains the theater support services (administration, cafeteria, stage entrances, etc.). One enters the theater through a low, one-story pavilion located at the intersection of the two building volumes, passing through a low, dark, sprawling garderobe space paved in Carrara marble. Upstairs in the lobby, roughly divided into three zones: a sunken lounge, a connecting lounge level at the height of the main theater entrances, and two long, hovering balconies. From the spaces of the lobby one enters the asymmeterically arranged theater. Three curving, white balconies, similar to those of the lobby, project from the rear wall. Throughout the major public spaces much care has been exercised to use Aalto furniture and finishes designed in the 1950s. Aalto light fixtures, lamps leather couches, and curving wooden banquettes are seen in the theater's major public spaces. Aalto's particular sensitivity to surfaces is evoked in such details as the bronze handrails wrapped in strips of leather and the interior entrance doors to the theater, which are upholstered in woven Chinese horsehair."
